HOW TO: Make & Keep New Years Resolutions

Happy New Year everyone!! I hope you all had an incredible NYE last night with your friends, family and loved ones! (And you’re not too hungover today ;) haha) I’m so excited that 2017 has arrived, and I can’t wait to share with you all what I have in store for Leopard Couture this year! It’s going to be a good one! :)

Today’s post is going to be how I make and plan my New Years Resolutions, as well as how to KEEP them! Apparently only 8% of people achieve their New Year’s Resolutions.. so hopefully after reading this post you can be a part of that 8% ;)

How to make and keep your new years resolutions

All you need to begin is some paper and a pen!

Step 1: Write down ALL your goals. Small, big, short term, long term you name it!

Step 2: Take all those goals you just wrote down and categorize them. Fitness, Health, Hobbies, Work, Blog etc.

Step 3: Go through each goal and for the ones that you realize you haven’t been doing, figure out WHY you’re NOT doing it.

Example:  I used to stretch before bed for 10 mins every night. However, once I moved to my new apartment which has hardwood floors rather than carpet, I found myself never stretching. I figured out it was the cold floors that was stopping me, so I finally got myself a yoga mat so I could start stretching again. So ask yourself, “What is preventing me from accomplishing my goal?” “How can I remove this obstacle?” Be honest with yourself!

Step 4: Write down HOW you’re going to accomplish each goal in a step by step method. The more detailed your plan is the better.

Example: “10minutes before bed every night, I will do my stretching on my yoga mat while listening to relaxing spa music” :)

NOTE: If your goal is a really big one, break it down into smaller goals so you are not feeling overwhelmed. For example ‘losing 15 lbs’ can seem like a lot from the start. So focus on behavioural goals like go to spin class 3x per week, learn how to cook 1 new healthy meal each week etc. In the long term all these small healthy habits will pay off. Plus they will seem more achievable! :)

Now that you have a detailed step by step plan to accomplish your goals, here are 7 TIPS to make sure you can continue to stick to your resolutions throughout the year.

Tip #1: Focus on 3-5 small achievable goals each month. You’ll feel good about accomplishing your small goals, and your success will make it easier to keep going! My small goals for JANUARY are:

  1. Meditate for 10 mins every morning
  2. Clean my room every night before bed (no matter how tired I am)…that way I will never have a messy room ;) hehe
  3. Do 10mins of stretching before bed

Tip #2: The 21 Day Rule. If you continue to do something for 21 days straight it’s been said that you can turn it into a habit. Let me tell you, this works wonders for me! I will write down a challenge, for example Meditate for 10mins every morning. Then on a piece of paper list Day 1~21 with a ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ box. For every day that I complete my challenge, I will give myself a check mark! Trust me, it feels good to tick off the box. I have this paper either on my bedside table or pasted on my wall so it’s always staring at me. Once I do my challenge for 21 days straight, it automatically turns into a habit, and I no longer have to think about doing the task. Here are some examples of challenges I have made into a habit using the 21 Day Rule!

  1. Make my bed every morning
  2. Drink a glass of water as soon as I get up
  3. Floss my teeth every night before bed (YAY no cavities!)
  4. Always take the stairs

Tip #3: Make sure your goals are VISIBLE! This is super key!! I keep all my goals in the Notes app on my iPhone, as well as in my agenda and notebook which is beside my bed. I review it every morning so I begin my day with a clear focus! I also like to write my goals on sticky notes and paste them on my bedroom wall. I do this with inspiring quotes as well to keep me motivated with my goals!

Tip #4: Share your goals with a family member, friend or roommate. This will keep you accountable for your goals and increase your chances of sticking to your resolutions!

Tip #5: Remind yourself WHY you are wanting to make these positive changes in your life. Say it out loud to keep you motivated and on track.

Tip #6: Don’t beat yourself up. There will be days when you miss a 10min meditation session or a workout, but don’t give up on your goal because of 1 slip day. We are human after all. Just work extra hard the next day, and learn from your mistakes!

Tip #7: Remember to reward yourself and celebrate your successes along the way! #Treatyoself ;)

How to make and keep your new years resolutions

Although January 1st is a fresh start, you don’t need to wait for a new year, month, or week to begin something. Just start TODAY, because why not! I started some of my 2017 resolutions in the last 2 weeks of December to get me excited for the New Year, and to get the ball rolling. Now, some of these new habits have started to sink in :)

Some of my GOALS for 2017 that are a ‘Year-long focus’ include :

  1. Fitness- go to the gym/ run 3x a week
  2. Random Acts of Kindness- Each month buy a stranger their coffee, movie ticket, ferry ticket etc.
  3. Save $X from every pay cheque for a vacation
  4. Read a book every month
  5. Post a blog post & video weekly

I hope that these tips and goal ideas have inspired you a little and were helpful in some way! I would LOVE to hear some of your resolutions, and also what goal setting practises works for you! Wishing you all a wonderful start to the New Year, and I hope all your dreams come true this year! Thank you so so much for reading and until next time – Mitra xx

I’ve heard that it takes 21 days to make something a habit, for me it’s cutting back the sugar and drinking more water each day.
